This process involves local training of a model on diverse datasets at various nodes, where each node adjusts the model’s parameters to reduce disease prediction error. The local nodes then send these updated parameters to a central aggregator, maintaining privacy by not sharing sensitive data. The central system combines these updates to enhance the model's generalization ability across different datasets. This refined global model is redistributed to all nodes for further training, in an ongoing, iterative cycle of improvement.
A base machine learning model is created, often using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) due to their efficacy in image recognition tasks. This model is designed to identify patterns and features in photographs that correlate with specific diseases.
The initial model is distributed to various participating nodes, which could be hospitals, research centers, or clinics. Each node has its collection of photographic data, such as dermatological images.
At each node, the model is trained locally on the available data. This step is crucial as it allows the model to learn from a diverse set of images, each potentially containing unique indicators of the disease in question. The training involves adjusting the model’s parameters to minimize error in disease prediction specific to each dataset.
Instead of sending the data back, each node sends only the updated model parameters (like weights and biases in the neural network) to a central aggregator. This approach ensures that sensitive photographic data remains on-site, addressing privacy concerns.
The central system aggregates these updates to refine the global model. It combines insights from all nodes, enhancing the model’s ability to generalize and detect diseases across varied datasets. This updated model is then redistributed for further local training, in a continuous, iterative process.
